The Lummi Chief one day brought his two daughters out. This meant the family would showcase their beauty and good qualities they carry in life. This was a custom in Coastal Salish culture. This was a way to honor someone and to also help them escape any miseries in life. The coming out day for the sisters was at their father’s last potlatch and after his potlatch, Chief Mt. Baker, a.k.a. Kulshan, and his two daughters (twin sisters) sat high over the Lummi people.
The Chief wanted his daughters to sit next to him forever.
This legendary story told by Pauline Hillaire of the Lummi tribe.
The word “KULSHAN” means “Bright, Clean and Shinny,” in the Lummi language.
