NAIHC OGA Hosts First Monthly Legislative Committee Conference Call
On Thursday, September 2, the NAIHC OGA held the first of what will be monthly Legislative Committee conference calls. The calls will be held on the first Thursday of every month at 1:00 p.m. EST. Announcements and reminders will be sent to the NAIHC membership before each call.
During the call, updates were provided from NAIHC and Paul Moorehead, of Drinker Biddle & Reath, LLP, regarding the status of the Helping Expedite and Advance Responsible Tribal Homeownership Act (HEARTH Act), FY2011 Appropriations, and the Indian Veterans Housing Opportunity Act. As discussed, NAIHC has developed a sample Letter of Support (MS Word: 41 KB) regarding the HEARTH Act for the use of NAIHC membership in corresponding with their representatives in the United States Senate, since NAIHC supports the Senate version of the HEARTH Act and would like to see it move during this legislative session.

Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) introduced the "S.1327 - Public and Indian Housing Crime and Drug Elimination Program Reauthorization Act of 2009" to provide much needed resources for activities to combat crime and drugs in Native American communities.
